Abstract
Purpose: This study Performed to examined the usefulness of KEDI-WISC in the lateralization of seizure focus in children with epilepsy.
Methods: We compared the MRI, and EEG medical records with VIQ-PIQ discrepancy in KEDI-WISC in 100 children with epilepsy diagnosed at Department of Pediatrics & Epilepsy Center, Sanggye Paik Hospital, College of Medicine, Inje University, Seoul from March 1998 to March 2001.
Results: 1) Mean age was 9.91 years and male to female ratio was 1:1.04. 2) Full scale IQ scores ranged from 43 to 133(mean 88.4, SD 22.8), verbal IQ scores ranged from 44 to 129(mean 91, SD 20.2), and performance IQ scores ranged from 38 to 138(mean 87.5, SD 24.2). 3) The EEG was a better indicator of lateralization than MRI or KEDI-WISC, although not significantly. 4) Left-side(language dominant side) pathology was associated with a loss of verbal cognitive function, whereas right-side pathology was associated with a loss of nonverbal function, although not significantly.
Conclusions: The EEG and MRI were of high lateralization value, while KEDI-WISC data were of limited use in this regard. combining EEG, MRI, and KEDI-WISC improved focus lateralization relative to using these data independently.
